How to get the selected file name from an input type file using jQuery

Today we will show you how to get the selected file name from an input type file using jQuery. On a recent job, we were using a form where a user could add up to 3 images to upload to a contact form on CF7. We styled this to look as follows:-

So how do we get the filename on a selection of a file? The answer is jQuery’s change() method.

You can use the jQuery’s change() method to get the file name selected by the HTML form control <input type="file" />. Let’s check out an example to understand how it works:

<!DOCTYPE html>
<html lang="en">
<head>
<meta charset="utf-8">
<title>jQuery Get Selected File Name</title>
<script src="https://code.jquery.com/jquery-1.12.4.min.js"></script>
<script>
    $(document).ready(function(){
        $('input[type="file"]').change(function(e){
            var fileName = e.target.files[0].name;
            alert('The file "' + fileName +  '" has been selected.');
        });
    });
</script>
</head>
<body>
    <form>
        <input type="file">
        <p><strong>Note:</strong> Choose any file on your computer and its name will be displayed in an alert dialog box.</p>
    </form>
</body>
</html>

In our case scenario, we wanted to display the filename inside the file box, in which case we added the following to the HTML:-

    <div class="icon-add-file"></div>

So all we did was replace the alert with the following JS code:-

$('.filename').html(fileName);

// If you are using multiple file uploads, you will have to do some traversing, in our case we had to get the parent(x3) selector and find the .filename class:
$(this).parent().parent().parent().find('.filename').html(fileName);

Replacing the default file inputs

Okay, so you might have looked at the first screenshot and wondered how we replaced the default styling of the file input boxes. Don’t worry, we have you covered here as well.

.file-wrapper {
    padding: 10px 20px;
    border: solid 2px #F8F8F8;
    background: #F8F8F8;
    color: #818586;
    max-width: 100%;
    outline: none;
    height: 150px;
    width: 100%;
    display: block;
}

div.wpcf7 input[type="file"] {
    width: 100%;
    height: 100%;
    opacity: 0;
    overflow: hidden;
    position: absolute;
    z-index: 1;
    left: 0;
    top: 0;
}

.icon-add-file {
    position: absolute;
    left: 0;
    right: 0;
    top: 0;
    bottom: 0;
    display: flex;
    align-items: center;
    justify-content: center;
    background-image: url(../img/icon-plus-symbol.png);
    display: block;
    width: 100%;
    height: 100%;
    background-repeat: no-repeat;
    background-position: center;
}

.file-wrapper .wpcf7-form-control-wrap {
    position: relative;
    width: 100%;
    display: block;
    top: 0;
    left: 0;
    height: 150px;
    margin-top: -23px;
}

So what we did here was that we hid the original styling of the file input using opacity 0, we then added a background image which covers the grey input box so anywhere can be clicked to bring up the file upload window. In our example, we were using CF7 so the code may need to be amended to your project.

Well, we sure hope this helps, if you have any questions let us know and we’ll get back to you!

Add Instagram Photos to Your Website or WordPress Website

In this tutorial, we will show you how you can add an Instagram feed using a WordPress plugin, and how you can add one using an external plugin for any type of website.

Adding Instagram Photos to your website using a Premium WordPress Plugin

The best plugin in which we have come across and use on a lot of our website builds is Instagram Feed – WordPress Instagram Gallery which is created by Elfsight. The plugin can be purchased here. This plugin can be purchased for $59 and can be used across multiple WordPress websites.

All you have to do is install the plugin, activate it and connect your Instagram account either using Facebook Business or Personal Instagram and then you can fully customise it to your needs.

A shortcode is provided so that you can add it anywhere on your website. The beauty of this plugin is that it’s very easy to use, it allows you to fully customise the appearance. You can use either a slider or tile display, specify how many items you want per row or column, and it even allows you to hover the images to see the post description, amount of likes, and comments which links to the feed. Sounds awesome right? That’s exactly why it’s our go-to plugin for Instagram feeds on WordPress websites.

The best part of using a plugin for this sort of thing is that Instagrams policies are forever changing, so by simply updating to the latest version, we can always ensure this plugin works as intended.

Here is an example of how this plugin looks on your WordPress website:

We actually use this plugin on this website which you will see just above the footer. You will see the description and comments/links in the first image above.

Looks great right?

We’ve used a variety of plugins, but this one has definitely proved to be the best on the market!

Add Instagram Photos to your website using Instafeeed.js

We came across a really good light-weight plugin to add Instagram photos to your website and this was by using Instafeed.js. No jQuery required, just plain old javascript.

https://raw.github.com/stevenschobert/instafeed.js/master/instafeed.min.js

How do I set it up?

Setting up Instafeed.js is pretty straight-forward. Just download the script and include it in your HTML:

<script type="text/javascript" src="path/to/instafeed.min.js"></script>

Instafeed.js also supports AMD/CommonJS:

// AMD
require(["path/to/instafeed"], function(Instafeed) {

});

// CommonJS
var Instafeed = require("instafeed.js");

NPM/Bower

Instafeed.js is also available on NPM and Bower:

npm install instafeed.js      # npm
bower install instafeed.js    # bower

Basic Usage

Here’s how easy it is to get all images tagged with #awesome:

<script type="text/javascript">
    var feed = new Instafeed({
        get: 'tagged',
        tagName: 'awesome',
        clientId: 'YOUR_CLIENT_ID'
    });
    feed.run();
</script>

Instafeed.js with automatically look for a

and fill it with linked thumbnails. Of course, you can easily change this behaviour using the standard options. Also, check out the advanced options and the section on templating for additional customizations.

Requirements

The only thing you’ll need to get going is a valid client id from Instagram’s API. You can easily register for one on Instagram’s website.

If you need help with that step, try Googling “How to get an Instagram client ID“.

Standard Options

  • clientId – Required. Your API client id from Instagram.
  • accessToken – A valid oAuth token. Can be used in place of a client ID.
  • target – The ID of a DOM element you want to add the images to.
  • template – Custom HTML template to use for images. See templating.
  • get – Customize what Instafeed fetches. Available options are:
    • popular (default) – Images from the popular page.
    • tagged – Images with a specific tag. Use tagName to specify the tag.
    • location – Images from a location. Use locationId to specify the location.
    • user – Images with a user. Use userId to specify the user. More info here.
  • tagName – Name of the tag to get. Use with get: ‘tagged’.
  • locationId – Unique id of a location to get. Use with get: ‘location’.
  • userId – Unique id of a user to get. Use with get: ‘user’.
  • sortBy – Sort the images in a set order. Available options are:
    • none (default) – As they come from Instagram.
    • most-recent – Newest to oldest.
    • least-recent – Oldest to newest.
    • most-liked – Highest # of likes to lowest.
    • least-liked – Lowest # likes to highest.
    • most-commented – Highest # of comments to lowest.
    • least-commented – Lowest # of comments to highest.
    • random – Random order.
  • links – Wrap the images with a link to the photo on Instagram.
  • limit – Maximum number of Images to add.
  • resolution – Size of the images to get. Available options are:
    • thumbnail (default) – 150×150
    • low_resolution – 306×306
    • standard_resolution – 612×612

Advanced Options

  • before – A callback function called before fetching images from Instagram.
  • after – A callback function called when images have been added to the page.
  • success – A callback function called when Instagram returns valid data. Takes the JSON data as an object argument.
  • error – A callback function called when there is an error fetching images.Takes an error message as a string argument.
  • mock – Fetch data without inserting images into DOM. Use with success callback.
  • filter – A function used to exclude images from your results. The function will be given the image data as an argument, and expects the function to return a boolean. See the example below for more information.

Example Filter (get username + tagged):

<script type="text/javascript">
    var feed = new Instafeed({
        get: 'user',
        userId: 'USER_ID',
        filter: function(image) {
            return image.tags.indexOf('TAG_NAME') >= 0;
        }
    });
    feed.run();
</script>

Templating

The easiest way to control the way Instafeed.js looks on your website is to use the template option. You can write your own HTML markup and it will be used for every image that Instafeed.js fetches.

<script type="text/javascript">
    var feed = new Instafeed({
        get: 'tagged',
        tagName: 'awesome',
        clientId: 'YOUR_CLIENT_ID',
        template: '<a href="{{link}}"><img src="{{image}}" /></a>'
    });
    feed.run();
</script>

Notice the {{link}} and {{image}}? The templating option provides several tags for you to use to control where variables are inserted into your HTML markup. Available keywords are:

  • {{type}} – the image’s type, can be image or video.
  • {{width}} – the image’s width, in pixels.
  • {{height}} – the image’s height, in pixels.
  • {{orientation}} – the image’s orientation, can be square, portrait, or landscape.
  • {{link}} – URL to view the image on Instagram’s website.
  • {{image}} – URL of the image source. The size is inherited from the resolution option.
  • {{caption}} – Image’s caption text. Defaults to empty string if there isn’t one.
  • {{likes}} – Number of likes the image has.
  • {{comments}} – Number of comments the image has.
  • {{location}} – Name of the location associated with the image. Defaults to empty string.
  • {{id}} – Unique ID of the image. Useful if you want to use iPhone hooks to open the images directly in the Instagram app.
  • {{model}} – Full JSON object of the image. If you want to get a property of the image that isn’t listed above you access it using dot-notation. (ex: {{model.filter}} would get the filter used)

How To Prevent Pasting Into Input Fields

In this tutorial, we are going to show you how you can prevent users from being able to copy and paste input values into certain fields. This can be especially useful when you have repeating fields for verification. For example, you may want to prevent users from copying the password into the repeat password input field, or you may want to do the same thing if you wish to include a repeat email address field. This is useful as it ensures the password the user is entering is correct, and it also ensures users receive email from your website. Let’s say you input the incorrect email address and then you copy this to the repeat email box, the user could end up not receiving the two-step certification email and in turn, this could lead to customers no longer using your website. You don’t want this to happen so sometimes this can be really effective to have in place.

So, how is this functionality achieved? How can we stop your users from pasting content into an HTML input field?

Well, we can use JavaScript to target an input field’s paste event and change how it works like so:

<input type="text" id="no-paste" />

<script>
if ( $('#no-paste').length > 0 ) {
  const pasteBox = document.getElementById('no-paste');
  pasteBox.onpaste = e => {
    e.preventDefault();
    return false;
  };
}
</script>

What this code does is cancels the default behaviour of the paste event (i.e. pasting the contents of the clipboard into the input element). When the user tries to paste the content into the field, using either a keyboard shortcut or context menu, nothing will happen. We also wrapped this with if ( $('#no-paste').length > 0 ) {   }, so that the script will only running on pages where it contains the #no-paste element, otherwise you will get an error.

If you want to check out a working CodePen of this in action, you can do so here.

How to add Multiple Google Maps Markers using Google Map API JS V3

In today’s tutorial, we are going to show you how you can add multiple markers to a single Google Map. Not just that though, we are also going to show you how to add custom map styles and custom markers to make your map look even better.

I’m just going to go ahead and show the full code we use to do this, then explain what everything does after. So let’s begin…

In our example, we are using the ID map so your HTML will simply look like this:

<div id="map"></div>

The only CSS styles we have added are:

#map {
    position: relative;
    width: 100%;
    height: 350px;
    display: block;
}

Pretty straight forward so far right? If you want a larger map then just increase the height of the #map in your CSS code.

For the Google Map to work, we need to get a Google API Key. If you need instructions on this then visit here.

You will need to include the JavaScript between the before the sript that runs your JS Google Map API code. This will be as follows:

  <script async defer src="https://maps.googleapis.com/maps/api/js?key=YOUR_API_KEY&callback=initMap"
  type="text/javascript"></script>

If you are using WordPress, then you can register and enqueue as follows:

    wp_register_script('google-js', 'https://maps.googleapis.com/maps/api/js?v=3.exp&key=AIzaSyBYL8d1Bnuy1b0EwX9iOldIuORnSMSJcjE' );
    wp_enqueue_script('google-js');

The WordPress code will go in either your theme or child-theme functions.php file if you have one set up.

Now for the JS code…

You will need to call the following code after you load the Google API script mentioned above:

/* Google Map - Contact Us */

if ($("#map").length > 0) {

    function initializeMap() {

        var locations = [
            ['Battersea Park Road', 51.4705666,-0.1728984, 2],
            ['Webbs Road', 51.4575458,-0.165245, 1]
        ];

        var map = new google.maps.Map(document.getElementById('map'), {
            zoom: 14,
            center: new google.maps.LatLng(51.465691,-0.1706737),
            mapTypeId: google.maps.MapTypeId.ROADMAP
        });

        var infowindow = new google.maps.InfoWindow();

        var marker, i;

        var icon = {
            url: "/wp-content/themes/spectrum/assets/img/map-marker.png",
            scaledSize: new google.maps.Size(70, 70)
        };

        var marker = new google.maps.Marker({
            map: map,
            animation: google.maps.Animation.DROP,
            icon : icon
        });

        for (i = 0; i < locations.length; i++) {
            marker = new google.maps.Marker({
                position: new google.maps.LatLng(locations[i][1], locations[i][2]),
                map: map,
                icon : icon
            });

            google.maps.event.addListener(marker, 'click', (function (marker, i) {
                return function () {
                    infowindow.setContent(locations[i][0]);
                    infowindow.open(map, marker);
                }
            })(marker, i));
        }

        var styles = [
            {"featureType":"water","elementType":"geometry","stylers":[{"color":"#e9e9e9"},{"lightness":17}]},{"featureType":"landscape","elementType":"geometry","stylers":[{"color":"#f5f5f5"},{"lightness":20}]},{"featureType":"road.highway","elementType":"geometry.fill","stylers":[{"color":"#ffffff"},{"lightness":17}]},{"featureType":"road.highway","elementType":"geometry.stroke","stylers":[{"color":"#ffffff"},{"lightness":29},{"weight":0.2}]},{"featureType":"road.arterial","elementType":"geometry","stylers":[{"color":"#ffffff"},{"lightness":18}]},{"featureType":"road.local","elementType":"geometry","stylers":[{"color":"#ffffff"},{"lightness":16}]},{"featureType":"poi","elementType":"geometry","stylers":[{"color":"#f5f5f5"},{"lightness":21}]},{"featureType":"poi.park","elementType":"geometry","stylers":[{"color":"#dedede"},{"lightness":21}]},{"elementType":"labels.text.stroke","stylers":[{"visibility":"on"},{"color":"#ffffff"},{"lightness":16}]},{"elementType":"labels.text.fill","stylers":[{"saturation":36},{"color":"#333333"},{"lightness":40}]},{"elementType":"labels.icon","stylers":[{"visibility":"off"}]},{"featureType":"transit","elementType":"geometry","stylers":[{"color":"#f2f2f2"},{"lightness":19}]},{"featureType":"administrative","elementType":"geometry.fill","stylers":[{"color":"#fefefe"},{"lightness":20}]},{"featureType":"administrative","elementType":"geometry.stroke","stylers":[{"color":"#fefefe"},{"lightness":17},{"weight":1.2}]}
        ];

        map.setOptions({styles: styles});

    }

    initializeMap();

}

So first things first... we added if ($("#map").length > 0) { so that it will only run the JS code on pages that call the map. If you allow it to run on any page, you will find yourself with some console errors, that's why we only run the code on pages that contain the map.

Secondly, we created an array of locations here; var locations = [, you can add as many as you like. Here, we include the info window title, the latitude and longitude coordinates which you can obtain from the URL when you click a location on Google Maps, and also the ID of the location, in our case there are only 2.

In our example, we added two markers, so what we did here is set the 'centre' point to a location that is in the centre of both of the locations so they show correctly on the map. The lat/long value for the centre can be defined here: center: new google.maps.LatLng(51.465691,-0.1706737),.

We then added a custom marker as were not a huge fan of the 'basic' google map markers. You will see on this line; url: "/wp-content/themes/spectrum/assets/img/map-marker.png", that we added the path to our custom marker. We also scaled the marker so that it is double the size so it looks awesome on retina ; ) This was defined on the next line here; scaledSize: new google.maps.Size(70, 70).

We then created a for loop which goes through all the locations and adds each of the pointers on the map using the custom icon that we created.

Finally, we decided to change the default styles of the map. It's always nice to customise this and make it unique. You will see we added var styles = [ and included a long line of code to adjust the map styles. Fear not though, this is very easy to do! Simply head to Snazzy Maps, pick a cool style the matches your website then replace the code with the one provided through their website.

What we end up with our example is a Google Map that looks as follows:

SWEET! We nailed it guys. We sure hope this helps you, if you need any assistance, feel free to drop us a comment below.

As always, happy coding!

CSS: Avoid image hover first time blinking / flicker

If you’ve ever used image replacement on hover for your background images then you will have noticed this annoying ‘blinking/flicker’ the first time you hover over the element. That’s because we are not pre-loading the image and so I would recommend loading the image on load to avoid this.

Here is a simple and effective CSS image preloading technique I have used several times. You can load several images by placing content: url() url() url()… etc.

body:after {
    display: none;
    content: url(path/to/image-hovered.jpg) url(path/to/another-image-hovered.jpg);
}

This can be done in various other ways but the CSS method is my preferred method.

If you want to go ahead and use a JavaScript method you can use the code below:-

function preloader() {
	if (document.images) {
		var img1 = new Image();
		var img2 = new Image();
		var img3 = new Image();

		img1.src = "http://domain.com/path/to/image-001.gif";
		img2.src = "http://domain.com/path/to/image-002.gif";
		img3.src = "http://domain.com/path/to/image-003.gif";
	}
}
function addLoadEvent(func) {
	var oldonload = window.onload;
	if (typeof window.onload != 'function') {
		window.onload = func;
	} else {
		window.onload = function() {
			if (oldonload) {
				oldonload();
			}
			func();
		}
	}
}
addLoadEvent(preloader);

I hope this helps!

If you want to see this in action, have a look at this CodePen we created here.

How to build a custom Countdown Timer in JavaScript [coming soon page]

Have you ever seen the countdown timers to a specific date on a ‘Website Coming Soon’ page or a countdown to an upcoming event? You know the ones that update every second until it reaches the ‘deadline’. Well in this tutorial we are going to show you how to do this.

You can see a working version here on JSFIDDLE.

So here we go:

HTML

<h1>Countdown Clock</h1>
<div id="clockdiv">
  <div>
    <span class="days"></span>
    <div class="smalltext">Days</div>
  </div>
  <div>
    <span class="hours"></span>
    <div class="smalltext">Hours</div>
  </div>
  <div>
    <span class="minutes"></span>
    <div class="smalltext">Minutes</div>
  </div>
  <div>
    <span class="seconds"></span>
    <div class="smalltext">Seconds</div>
  </div>
</div>

CSS

body {
  text-align: center;
  background: #169fe6;
  font-family: sans-serif;
  font-weight: 100;
}

h1 {
  color: #FFFFFF;
  font-weight: 100;
  font-size: 40px;
  margin: 40px 0px 20px;
}

#clockdiv {
  font-family: sans-serif;
  color: #FFFFFF;

}

.smalltext {
  padding-top: 5px;
  font-size: 16px;
}

#clockdiv span {

 * ### HOW TO CREATE A VALID ID TO USE: ###
 * Go to www.twitter.com and sign in as normal, go to your settings page.
 * Go to "Widgets" on the left-hand side.
 * Create a new widget for what you need eg "user timeline" or "search" etc.
 * Feel free to check "exclude replies" if you don't want replies in results.
 * Now go back to settings page, and then go back to widgets page and
 * you should see the widget you just created. Click edit.
 * Look at the URL in your web browser, you will see a long number like this:
 * 345735908357048478
 * Use this as your ID below instead!

/**
 * How to use TwitterFetcher's fetch function:
 *
 * @function fetch(object) Fetches the Twitter content according to
 * the parameters specified in object.
 *
 * @param object {Object} An object containing case sensitive key-value pairs
 *     of properties below.
 *
 * You may specify at minimum the following two required properties:
 *
 * @param object.id {string} The ID of the Twitter widget you wish
 * to grab data from (see above for how to generate this number).
 * @param object.domId {string} The ID of the DOM element you want
 *     to write results to.
 *
 * You may also specify one or more of the following optional properties
 *     if you desire:
 *
 * @param object.maxTweets [int] The maximum number of tweets you want
 * to return. Must be a number between 1 and 20. Default value is 20.
 * @param object.enableLinks [boolean] Set false if you don't want
 * urls and hashtags to be hyperlinked.
 * @param object.showUser [boolean] Set false if you don't want user
 * photo / name for tweet to show.
 * @param object.showTime [boolean] Set false if you don't want time of tweet
 *     to show.
 * @param object.dateFunction [function] A function you can specify
 * to format date/time of tweet however you like. This function takes
 * a JavaScript date as a parameter and returns a String representation
 *     of that date.
 * @param object.showRetweet [boolean] Set false if you don't want retweets
 *     to show.
 * @param object.customCallback [function] A function you can specify
 * to call when data are ready. It also passes data to this function
 * to manipulate them yourself before outputting. If you specify
 * this parameter you must output data yourself!
 * @param object.showInteraction [boolean] Set false if you don't want links
 * for reply, retweet and favourite to show.
 * @param object.showImages [boolean] Set true if you want images from tweet
 *     to show.
 * @param object.lang [string] The abbreviation of the language you want to use
 * for Twitter phrases like "posted on" or "time ago". Default value
