The second point is, to put it nicely, completely unsubstantiated. People have been saying link building is dead for over a decade now, and no matter how many times this idea is espoused, links continue to be effective and valued by search engines. In many cases, those repeating this idea mean that low-quality link building is dead, and that’s true. Whilst, in the 2000s, people could spam links all over the place with little rhyme or reason, search engine algorithms have become more complex and advanced over time. This means that those who aren’t willing to put in the work are likely to get penalised if they’re even acknowledged at all.

Whilst link building often involves mimicking the natural link profile of a growing business for search engines, that doesn’t mean you can’t do things the old fashioned way. By creating a local resource page on your site, you can get links naturally from people discussing the area, whilst also tying yourself to your local area in the eyes of search engines. These pages can be anything from blogs on things to do in the area, important resources available in the area, local fun facts, or even simple directories.

See If Your Place of Education Offers Alumni Links

Some of the most coveted links in link building are university and government website links. One of the more common ways to get these types of links is reaching out to your university, if you went to university, and seeing if they’d like to showcase your business. Universities love bragging about the achievements of those that have gone there, so why not make those student loans a little more worthwhile?

Whilst not necessarily as powerful a tool as guest blogging, it does offer some benefits that creating full new articles does not. Sometimes, sites will be hesitant to take full guest blogs and will otherwise prefer to place links in blogs that already exist for a fee.

The Benefits of Curated Linking

The main practical benefit of curated linking is the fact that you’re receiving historical links within blogs that have already had time to build page authority, which can look great in your link profile. After all, if it appears from an algorithmic perspective that people have been linking back to your website for years, it will seem more natural than you suddenly getting a large number of people linking to you in a short period.

Curated links also provide you with more options of places to post, allowing you to get links in places that would have been unavailable through other means. This is not to mention the benefit of it simply being a more affordable option than getting full articles written by professionals.

Doing this yourself as opposed to working with an agency will still be quite time-consuming, mainly due to the need to source posts on viable websites and make contact to discuss their willingness to link to you. However, it is an incredibly viable link building option for those who are willing to put in the work.

This is one of the more opportunistic options for link building, but the process is quite simple. Broken link building involves finding dead links in local blogs that would have once linked to competitors or similar businesses in the area. Then, either find or create relevant information on your site (generally in the form of a blog) and contact the site owner to see if they would be interested in replacing the dead link with your resource.

This is often a way to get free links on sites, but it is also difficult to do on a consistent basis without a lot of research. The number of dead links relating to your services will, in most cases, be relatively limited, and finding them can be tricky. However, it is an entirely viable method of sourcing links for those who are willing to put in the work.

As a side note, if you’ve restructured your site recently and noticed a dip in rankings, it may be worth going back and making sure that links you’ve built in the past are still functioning. Long-tail keywords are your friend.

Can you make a guess how many people are trying to get traffic with “digital marketing,” “hair care,” “credit cards,” and more? Probably a lot more than you think. There’s just one problem; they’re all doing the wrong thing.

These keywords are generic and very likely oversaturated. Plus, they have no intent behind them anyway. However, imagine instead of trying to rank for “what are credit cards?” you build content around “what are the best no-fee credit cards in Ontario?” Do you see the difference? The latter keyword is a long-tail example and is something people are searching for. Everyone already knows what a credit card is, so no one is searching for the first keyword—unless they’re from another planet, which is just as unlikely.

Long-tail keywords typically have sizeable search volumes that grow with time, so it makes sense to use them to boost organic traffic. Just bear in mind, though, that ranking for long-tail keywords is almost always a long-term tactic. You’re almost guaranteed to see no impact on your traffic in the first few months. But if you’re patient, the results typically start to come in at the six-month mark and beyond, and it can affect your website traffic rankings significantly.

Don’t search for keywords. Search for questions.

Technically, they’re the same thing. However, when most people make a search engine query, they usually phrase them as questions. Quick usage of Google’s autocomplete feature will prove this assertion. What’s more? These are usually long-tail keywords, which means the competition and traffic potential is relatively low and high, respectively.

So how to get traffic to your website using these questions? You’d have to find them first, and besides Google’s autocomplete, places like Quora are a good place to start your search. A quick tip: if you find a Wikipedia page as a top result, the chances are that you may have a shot at the keyword in question. Wikipedia typically doesn’t employ too many backlinks, so showing up as a top result points to the fact that you may be able to rank for the same keyword without risky backlinking practices.

Tools like Moz are also great at sniffing out a page’s domain and page authority. You can use it to analyse the top five results to understand your chances for ranking for any given keyword better.

Niche topics are amazing.

There was a time before Google Panda when crash and burn website experts were raking in the big bucks. All they had to do was create a website and stuff it full of hundreds of pages talking about the exact same niche topic. Thankfully, those days are gone, and Google’s algorithm has prioritised content quality.

Still, this doesn’t negate the usefulness of niche topics. There are so many untapped or undersaturated niches out there that are just waiting to be discovered and optimised. Niche topic sites include gun blogs, health blogs, writing recommendation blogs like Best Writers Online, gaming blogs, gardening blogs, and more. Almost anything could be a niche topic.

So look out for niches that have relatively little competition, and you should be able to create content that will rank for said niche easily.

Look out for markets beyond your geographic location.

Don’t forget; the world is a global village. Just because you live in the United States does not mean you should only target US traffic. Consider creating content for a more global audience. Link building is one of the SEO strategies that have stood the test of time.

Ever since 1998, Google used backlinks (getting hyperlinks from someone’s website back to your own) to assess website quality. So if your site has a lot of links from relevant sources, Google will deem it an authority site, boosting your ranking in the SERPs…

…giving you a major increase in traffic and pageviews!

But before we move ahead, you should know that there are two types of links.

  • Internal links are links that are placed on a domain and point to the same domain.
  • External links are links that are placed on a domain and point to a different domain.

There are many link building techniques, but below we’re going to focus on:

  • Competitor Backlink Analysis
  • Resource Pages
  • Web Directories

We’ll also go through the best backlink checker tools so you know which tool is worth investing in.

Let’s go!

See What Works For Your Competitors

Your competitors spend large sums of money and time developing a backlinking strategy.

So instead of starting from scratch, you should spy on them and reverse engineer their backlinking approach. This way, they’re the ones working hard to get the links. All you need to do is follow them to get the same backlinks!

To begin:

1. Identify Competitors:
List 5 competitors that are ranking for a keyword you’d like to rank for.

2. Backlink Analysis:
Analyse their backlink profiles with Ahrefs’ Site Explorer by adding the link from your competitors. Click on the orange loop button.

Then, click on backlinks.

Here, you can view your competitor’s backlinks. You can also sort the backlinks by selecting the Link Type button.

3. Export and Reverse Engineer:
Finally, export the list and think about what your competitor did to receive that backlink. Is it the quality of their content? Do they offer something valuable and unique?

You might find it a bit difficult at first. But the more you do this, the more you’ll get a good feel for the process.

Get Listed On Resource Pages

Bloggers and influencers often have a resource page that includes:

  • Tools
  • Products
  • Services
  • Website

…they use to run their business.

Getting listed on resource pages is one of the easiest ways to get strong and powerful backlinks.

For example:

I found Loud Digital’s resource page and sent them an email requesting to get listed on their resource page. They included my SEO Guide 2 days later.

…And that is how simple it was to build a backlink from a site with a respectable DR of 37!

To get listed:

1. Undergo Google Footprint Search:
Use an advanced search like [Your niche] + “resources” to find more targeted and specific Google results.

Alternatively, you can also try Inurl:[your niche] + resources to narrow down your results.

2. Scrape the links
Right-click on a search result and click ‘scrape similar.’ Now you will have all the relevant links on the page.

Then click ‘export to Google Docs.’

3. Analyse a Resource Page:
To see whether the site will be a good fit, you’ll need to assess:

  • Relevancy: Does your product fit well for their site and yours?
  • Types of Links: What other links do they have on their resource page?
  • Page Type: Is there a better fit?
  • Special Offers: Can you give users a discount or free trial so you get features?

4. Pitching your site:
First, begin thanking the site owner for their resource page and how it’s helped you learn more about a topic. You can then offer something in return, like an evergreen detailed guide within the same niche that would be helpful to their audience.

Take Advantage of Web Directories

Web directory link building is the process of adding your website into an online database.

The directories should be:

  • Active
  • Relevant to your industry
  • Well moderated

…so you can stay on-topic with Google!

If your site is new and recently indexed, getting links from a directory is a great way to start. It shouldn’t form the backbone of your backlinking strategy. However, it can help give your website that much needed link juice boost!

To start:

1. Identify a high-quality directory:
See if the site’s internal page is indexed to Google’s database. You can check this by doing a Google search for the directory’s homepage URL, to see whether the page comes up.

Low-quality directories don’t tend to show up and are not generally indexed by Google.

You can also run the site through Ahrefs to see how authoritative the domain is.

2. Create a Good Directory Submission:

Ideally, each submission is:

  • Unique
  • Descriptive
  • Brand name or URL focused

For example, here’s how I would phrase my submission if I submitted my site to two different directories:

  • Matthew Woodward provides SEO and Affiliate marketing advice to beginner and intermediate internet marketers.
  • Matthew Woodward is a seven-figure blogger who provides actionable marketing and SEO advice for new and experienced bloggers who are keen to increase their traffic

Here, I’ve conveyed the same message. But I wrote it in different ways so I can avoid issues like over-optimization, duplicate content, and manipulative link building.

A backlink checker can be extremely helpful when it comes to carrying out the backlinking strategies above.

2. SEMRush: SEMRush also has an intuitive dashboard. The subscription starts at $99.95/month.

3. SEO SpyGlass: SEO Spyglass had a major update recently, making it significantly more user-friendly. It’s customizable, rapid fast, and a more budget-friendly option. SEO Spyglass costs $124.75 for the first year and then you only pay $4.17/month afterward.

In the eyes of a search engine, your content is:

  • High quality
  • Worth ranking
